In late August 1939 the Southern Rhodesia Air Unit was dispatched to Nairobi as part of the mobilisation for joining the mother country in preparation for war against Germany. Whilst in Nairobi, three days after the declaration of war on the 6th September 1939 the name of the Southern Rhodesia Air Unit was changed to No1 Squadron, Southern Rhodesia Air Force. It is interesting to note that makers details on the brooch Dobbies Ltd of Nairobi, who were quality jewellers, known to have retailed the famous Rolex Watches. It is most likely the brooch was specially commissioned at this time. The Southern Rhodesia Air Force was short lived as in April 1940 it was adopted by RAF and the number changed to 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron RAF. No. 237 Squadron was disbanded in 1945 and No1 Squadron South Rhodesian Air Force would have to wait until 1951 before it was reformed. The title Royal Rhodesian Air Force was adopted in 1954.
